Mole Mapping

with Fotofinder® Master

WHAT IS TOTAL BODY PHOTOGRAPHY?

Digital Mole Mapping, or Total Body Photography, is an advanced, AI-supported surveillance tool designed to help monitor ALL your moles and skin lesions, assisting in the early detection of skin cancers, including melanoma.

A baseline set of 20 ultra-high-resolution photographs is taken to document existing moles across your entire body. During follow-up examinations, these photographs are used to track any new or changing moles. Images taken on the FotoFinder® Master system can be compared directly to analyse subtle shifts in size, colour, border, and shape—enabling suspicious lesions to be caught earlier than would be possible through a standard, one-off check-up of individual moles.

Jersey experiences exceptionally high rates of malignant melanoma and other skin cancers—levels comparable to Australia and New Zealand, and significantly higher than those seen on the UK mainland or in continental Europe.
Malignant melanoma is a type of skin cancer that originates in melanocytes — the specialised cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment in your skin, hair, and eyes.
A common misconception is that skin cancer only develops within moles you already have.
In reality:
Because changes to your skin can be subtle and easily missed, Total Body Mole Mapping provides an accurate, complete visual baseline of your entire body.
Annual full-body scans allow us to detect new or evolving moles before they become clinically suspicious.
Early detection is crucial — when identified and treated in its earliest stages, malignant melanoma has a cure rate of over 95%.
Regular screening offers peace of mind and ensures that any potential risks are caught early when they are most treatable.

Total Body Mole Mapping can be offered to patients who want to undergo comprehensive screening for abnormal moles and melanoma. It is especially recommended for patients with the following risk factors for melanoma/ skin cancers:

– Light skin types reacting sensitively to sunlight

– Large number of moles (more than 50 moles or more than five atypical moles)

– Large congenital (present from birth) moles

– Getting sunburnt as a child or adolescent

– Family history of skin cancer

– Previous diagnosis of skin cancer or atypical moles

– Regular exposure to strong sunlight

– History of sunbed use

– Weak immune system due to an organ transplant, cancer, chemotherapy or Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection

During a standard 40-50 minute appointment, we will take 20 high-definition ‘RAW’ photographs covering all areas of your body.
Your Comfort: You may undress to whichever level you feel comfortable with, though wearing minimal, preferably plain underwear allows us to capture as much of your skin as possible. If recommended by your dermatologist, we may also photograph your breasts and/or buttocks.
Close-Up Examination: Following whole-body photography, we take individual high-magnification video dermoscopy images of any irregular or atypical moles, as well as those identified by your consultant as requiring closer monitoring. All moles we photograph in that way are checked with advanced artificial intelligence for pigmented lesions.
Medical Staff & Chaperones: Scans are performed by an experienced male medical photographer. A female chaperone is always present for female patients. Please note that Dr Kukula is not present during the scanning session itself; she later reviews any new or changing moles, alongside those flagged by advanced artificial intelligence.
Requirements: You will be asked to sign a consent form prior to your appointment. Patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

– Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you can easily remove

– Choose plain coloured underwear without a pattern, gentlemen should wear shorts that do not cover their upper thighs, and swim briefs are preferred (as on the chart below)

– You may bring in your own slippers and gown for your comfort

– Avoid wearing makeup and nail polish, we will ask you to remove jewelry

– Avoid self-tanning products 10 days before the appointment

– Keep your hair tied and away from your face

– Shave areas with significant body hair so that moles can be visualised

Your photographs are stored on the local secure server – part of the FotoFinder® Master System; they are not stored in any off-site location (i.e. “the cloud”). Total body photographs are not shared or viewed by anyone except Dr Kukula. In some situations, Dr Kukula may wish to consult other experts/ dermatologists with anonymised images or use the built-in FotoFinder Artificial Intelligence mole grading system.

Total Body Mole Mapping may be covered by certain insurance providers, subject to individual patient approval. Prior authorisation is necessary. Our Mole Mapping Clinic provides this service for £290 per session. Should a consultation with Dr Kukula be needed, it will be charged separately. Payment for the Total Body Mole Mapping is required on the day of your appointment.

Your doctor may recommend a Total Body Mole Mapping session. You’re also welcome to arrange a consultation with Dr Kukula to discuss whether mole mapping is right for you.
